A latest archeological discovery in Mexico has become the “talk of the town” and soon the world as well. An ancient dedicatory offering was recently found beneath the Sun pyramid within the Teotihuacan ruins in Mexico. Archeologists found various offerings that dated back thousands of years, even before the Aztecs arrived in the country.
The archaeologists made this new discovery after following an old tunnel that had been dug in 1930’s by another group of researches. At the time they dug the tunnel, they had missed the core of the pyramid through miscalculation, and the offering remained hidden. The offerings were found after the current researchers began digging small extensions from the original tunnel.
The newly discovered artifacts include an intricately carved green serpentine stone mask, and archaeologists believe that, due to the detail, it was probably a portrait. There are also eleven ceremonial clay pots believed to be offerings to a rain god, similar to Tlaloc, who was worshipped by devotees for over 1,500 years.
Aside from the ancient relics, archaeologists also found bones from animals and humans. Bones of an eagle with a rabbit in its stomach, as well as various feline and canine animals were found on a base within the temple that dates back to 50 A.D. There were also several burial areas that contained infant remains. Enrique Perez Cortes, Archeologist of the National Institute of Anthropology and History, said that the offerings, as well as the remains, were part of the consecration ritual that took place during the construction of the Pyramid of the Sun.
